Syrup of figs: how long it takes to work and the best time to take it

Califig Syrup of Figs usually works in 8 to 12 hours. That is why most people take it at bedtime, so it works by the next morning.

How does syrup of figs work?

Califig contains senna, a stimulant laxative, in a fig-flavoured syrup. Senna makes the muscles of the bowel contract so a stool is moved along. It is used for short-term relief of occasional constipation.

When is the best time to take it?

At night, before bed. Because it takes 8 to 12 hours, a bedtime dose normally leads to a bowel movement the following morning. Follow the dose on the pack for your age.

Can I take syrup of figs every day?

No, not long term. Stimulant laxatives are for short-term use. If you still need a laxative after a week, or constipation keeps coming back, speak to a pharmacist or GP. Regular use can make the bowel rely on it.

It has not worked. What now?

Give it the full 12 hours, drink plenty of water and move around. If there is no result, do not double the dose. Other options work in different ways: Fybogel adds fibre, lactulose and Laxido soften the stool, and Dulcolax suppositories act fastest.

Who should not take it?

Do not use it if you have severe stomach pain, vomiting, or a blocked bowel. Ask a pharmacist first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
