Constipation relief: what works and how quickly

Constipation means going less often than usual, or stools that are hard and difficult to pass. It is very common and usually short-term.

Start with the basics

  • Drink plenty of water through the day.
  • Increase fibre gradually: fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, oats.
  • Move more – even a daily walk helps.
  • Do not ignore the urge to go.

If you need a laxative

Califig Syrup of Figs is a gentle senna-based stimulant laxative. Taken at bedtime it usually works overnight, within 8 to 12 hours. Check the label for the right dose and age.

Stimulant laxatives are for short-term use. If you need them for more than a few days, speak to a pharmacist.

When to see a GP

See a GP if constipation lasts more than 2 weeks, you have blood in your stools, unexplained weight loss, severe tummy pain, or a lasting change in bowel habit – especially if you are over 50.
