Private prescriptions in Liverpool: how to get one dispensed and what to expect

Yes, you can get a private prescription dispensed at Anfield Pharmacy, 140 Oakfield Road, Liverpool L4 0UQ. Bring or send us the prescription, we give you a price for the medicine, and once you are happy we dispense it. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.

What is a private prescription?

A private prescription is written by a private doctor, dentist or other prescriber, such as a private clinic or an online doctor service, and not on the NHS. You pay the full cost of the medicine. NHS prescription charges and exemptions do not apply.

How do I get my private prescription dispensed?

  1. Bring the prescription to the pharmacy, or ask your prescriber to send an electronic private prescription to us.
  2. We give you a price. The cost depends on the medicine, the strength and the quantity.
  3. We dispense it. If the medicine is not in stock we can usually order it for the next working day.

The pharmacy has to keep the original prescription, so please bring the original and not a photo or photocopy, unless it has been sent to us electronically by the prescriber.

How much does a private prescription cost?

There is no fixed charge. You pay for the medicine itself, so the price varies. Call us on 0151 263 3631 with the name, strength and quantity and we will give you a quote before you travel.

Can I use a private prescription from abroad or from an online doctor?

Prescriptions from UK-registered prescribers, including UK online doctor services, can be dispensed. Prescriptions from some other countries can also be dispensed if they meet UK legal requirements. Ask our pharmacist and we will check it for you.

Is a private prescription the same as buying medicine over the counter?

No. Many medicines can be bought without any prescription. You can shop our online pharmacy for these, with tracked UK delivery from £2.49 and free delivery over £25. For some common conditions you may not need a prescription at all: the NHS Pharmacy First service lets our pharmacist assess and treat seven conditions without a GP appointment.
