Booking a holiday, a work trip, Hajj or Umrah, or going to see family abroad? The vaccines you need depend on where you are going, and some need starting weeks before you fly. Our travel clinic at Anfield Pharmacy can check what you need and give it in the same appointment, with no GP referral.
When should I book?
Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines need more than one dose, spaced days or weeks apart, and your body needs time to build protection. If you are travelling sooner than that, still come in. Many vaccines can be given at short notice and we will tell you honestly what is worth having.
Which vaccines might I need?
It depends entirely on the destination, the time of year, how long you are staying and what you will be doing there. Commonly needed vaccines include:
- Hepatitis A and typhoid for much of Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Central and South America
- Tetanus, diphtheria and polio boosters if yours are out of date
- Meningitis ACWY, which is required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims
- Rabies for longer or rural trips, or where medical help is far away
- Hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis for specific destinations and activities
- Malaria tablets, which are not a vaccine but are essential in many countries
Our pharmacist checks your destination against current UK travel health guidance, so you are not paying for anything you do not need.
Hajj and Umrah travellers
Saudi Arabia requires proof of Meningitis ACWY vaccination for pilgrims, given at least 10 days before arrival and valid for the stated period. We provide the vaccine and the certificate you will be asked for. Ask us about seasonal flu and other recommended jabs at the same visit.
What happens at the appointment
You tell us where you are going and when. The pharmacist runs through your destination, your medical history, any allergies and the vaccines you have had before, then recommends what you need. Anything suitable is given there and then, and you leave with a record of what you have had.
