Losing a filling or having a crown come loose is uncomfortable but rarely an emergency. The aim is to protect the tooth and keep the crown safe until your dentist can repair it properly.
Lost filling
The exposed tooth can be sensitive to hot, cold and sweet foods. A temporary filling material such as Dentemp Loose Cap & Lost Filling Repair covers the hole and reduces sensitivity for a few days.
Crown or cap has come off
- Keep the crown safe and clean.
- Clean and dry the tooth and the inside of the crown.
- Use a temporary dental cement such as Dentemp Loose Cap & Lost Filling Repair to hold it in place, biting down gently to seat it.
- Eat soft food on the other side and book your dentist.
Never use household glue, and if the crown does not sit properly, leave it out and keep it safe.
When it is urgent
Call NHS 111 or an urgent dentist if you have swelling of the face or jaw, a high temperature, severe pain that painkillers do not control, or bleeding that will not stop.
