Nappy rash is red, sore skin in the nappy area, caused by wee and poo sitting against the skin. Almost every baby gets it at some point. Most cases clear within 3 days with simple care.
Treating it at home
- Change nappies as soon as they are wet or dirty.
- Clean gently with water or fragrance-free wipes and pat dry.
- Give your baby nappy-free time every day.
- Apply a thin layer of barrier cream at every change. Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment is fragrance-free, suitable from birth and does not need wiping off at each change.
Metanium has been discontinued across the UK. If you used it before, Bepanthen does the same job as a barrier that protects while the skin heals.
When to see a GP or pharmacist
Ask for advice if the rash has not improved after a week, has bright red spots spreading into skin folds (it may be thrush), blisters or broken skin, or if your baby has a fever or seems unwell.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly does nappy rash clear?
Usually within 3 days with good nappy care and a barrier cream.
Should I use talc on nappy rash?
No. Talc can irritate the skin and should not be used.
What is the difference between nappy rash and thrush?
Thrush tends to be bright red with small spots spreading into the skin creases and does not improve with barrier cream alone. Ask a pharmacist or GP.
