If your eyes are itching and your nose hasn't stopped running this month, you're not imagining it — July is one of the worst months for hay fever in the UK. Grass pollen peaks through June and July, and warm, breezy days around Liverpool and the North West send counts soaring. The good news? With the right routine, most people can get their symptoms properly under control.
Why July hits hay fever sufferers so hard
Around 95% of UK hay fever is triggered by grass pollen, and grass is in full flower right now. On warm days, pollen rises with the morning air and settles back down in the early evening — which is why many people feel worst first thing and around dinner time. City areas like Liverpool can also trap pollen alongside pollution, making symptoms feel even more intense.
Your daily defence plan
- Take your antihistamine early. A once-daily, non-drowsy antihistamine like Piriteze Allergy 10mg Tablets works best taken regularly through the season, not just when symptoms strike. For children aged 6+, Piriteze Children's Syrup is a gentle option.
- Protect your eyes. Itchy, watery eyes respond brilliantly to targeted drops such as Optrex Hay Fever Relief Eye Drops or Optrex Double Action Itchy & Watery Eye Drops. Wraparound sunglasses outdoors help too.
- Rinse pollen away. A saline spray like Sterimar Breathe Easy Daily Nasal Spray flushes pollen out of your nose before it triggers a reaction — brilliant used after time outdoors.
- Shower and change after being outside. Pollen clings to hair, skin and clothes. A quick evening rinse stops you carrying it to bed.
- Keep windows closed at peak times. Early morning and early evening are the worst. Dry laundry indoors on high-count days.
When one treatment isn't enough
Plenty of people need a combination: a daily antihistamine plus eye drops plus a nasal spray. That's completely normal in peak season, and these treatments are designed to work alongside each other. If you're still struggling after a week or two of regular use, pop in and speak to our pharmacist — sometimes a different antihistamine or a steroid nasal spray makes all the difference.
Hay fever or summer cold?
A quick check: hay fever tends to cause itching (eyes, nose, throat), clear watery mucus, and symptoms that flare outdoors and ease indoors. Colds bring thicker mucus, sometimes a mild temperature, and usually pass within a week or so. If symptoms drag on all summer, pollen is the likely culprit.
