4–6 weeks before you fly
This is the most important window — and the one most people miss.
- Check if you need vaccinations. Destinations like parts of Africa, Asia and South America may require jabs such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever or Rabies. Many need 2–4 weeks to take full effect.
- Book a travel health appointment. We'll check your destination, advise exactly what you need, and issue any required International Certificates.
- Review repeat prescriptions. Make sure you have enough medication for the whole trip, plus a few extra days.
Your travel medicine bag — the essentials
- Antihistamines (for bites, stings and unexpected allergies)
- Painkillers (paracetamol/ibuprofen)
- Anti-diarrhoea treatment and rehydration sachets
- Motion sickness tablets
- Plasters, antiseptic and a small first aid kit
- High-factor sunscreen (SPF30+) and after-sun
- Insect repellent (especially for malaria-risk areas)
Don't forget
- Sun safety: foreign sun is often far stronger than the UK — pack and use proper SPF
- Hydration: rehydration sachets are a lifesaver if you pick up a tummy bug
- Medication in hand luggage: never pack essential medicines in the hold in case bags go missing
- A copy of your prescription if travelling with prescription medicines
