Yes. For most people, softening the wax with olive oil or ear drops for a few days is enough for it to come out on its own. Never use cotton buds, which push wax further in.
Which product should I use?
- Earol Olive Oil Spray: a measured spray of olive oil that softens wax gently. Easy to use without tilting your head for long, and suitable for regular use if you often get a build-up.
- Otex Express Ear Drops: contain urea hydrogen peroxide, which breaks hardened wax into smaller pieces. Better for a stubborn plug.
- Otex Express Combi Pack: the drops plus a bulb syringe to rinse the softened wax out with warm water.
How long does it take?
Usually 3 to 5 days of using drops or spray two or three times a day. Hearing can feel slightly worse at first as the wax swells before it breaks up.
How do I use ear drops properly?
- Lie with the affected ear facing up.
- Put in the drops or spray as the pack directs.
- Stay there for 5 to 10 minutes, then wipe away any that runs out.
When should I not use them?
Do not use drops if you have ear pain, discharge, a perforated eardrum, a recent ear infection or ear surgery, or grommets. Check the pack for the minimum age.
When should I get help?
See a pharmacist, GP or audiologist if your ear is still blocked after 5 days, or if you have pain, sudden hearing loss, dizziness or ringing in the ear.
