Gaviscon Advance vs Gaviscon Double Action: what is the difference?

Gaviscon Advance vs Gaviscon Double Action: what is the difference?

Gaviscon Advance is the stronger choice for acid reflux, because it contains more alginate and forms a thicker protective layer on top of the stomach contents. Gaviscon Double Action contains alginate plus antacids, so it both forms a layer and neutralises acid, which suits heartburn with indigestion.

What is in each one?

  • Gaviscon Advance: sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate. The alginate forms a raft that floats on the stomach contents and helps stop acid coming back up.
  • Gaviscon Double Action: sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. It forms a raft and the calcium carbonate neutralises acid.

Which should I choose?

When do I take it?

After meals and at bedtime, following the dose on the pack.

Is there anything to watch for?

Gaviscon products contain sodium, and Advance contains potassium. Ask a pharmacist first if you are on a low-salt diet, have kidney or heart problems, or take regular medicines. Leave two hours between Gaviscon and other medicines.

When should I see a GP?

If you need it most days for more than two weeks, or have difficulty swallowing, weight loss, vomiting or black stools.
