UK Heatwave Health: How to Stay Safe, Hydrated and Sleeping Well

British homes are built to keep heat in — which is exactly why UK heatwaves feel so brutal. When July temperatures climb, A&E visits rise, sleep collapses, and older neighbours quietly struggle. Here's how to look after yourself and the people around you when the mercury spikes.

Hydration: more than just water

In hot weather you lose fluid and salts through sweat. Signs you're running dry: headache, dark urine, tiredness, dizziness and irritability. To stay ahead:

  • Drink regularly, not just when thirsty — thirst lags behind dehydration, especially in older adults.
  • Replace salts on very hot daysElectrolyte Hydration Sachets restore sodium, potassium and magnesium far better than water alone. Great after exercise, gardening or a day out.
  • Watch alcohol and caffeine — both push fluids out faster than they put them in.
  • Eat water-rich foods — melon, cucumber, tomatoes, yoghurt all count towards your intake.

Keep your home (and yourself) cool

  • Close curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows during the day; open windows when the outside air cools in the evening.
  • Cool showers, damp flannels on the neck and wrists, and light cotton clothing genuinely help.
  • Plan outdoor jobs and exercise before 11am or after 6pm.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked cars — even a few minutes is dangerous.

Heat exhaustion vs heatstroke — know the difference

Heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, cramps, fast breathing) usually improves within 30 minutes if the person moves somewhere cool, lies down, and sips fluids — electrolyte drinks are ideal. Heatstroke is an emergency: hot dry skin, confusion, temperature over 40°C, or loss of consciousness means call 999 while cooling the person however you can.

Check on those most at risk

Older adults, babies, and anyone with heart, kidney or breathing conditions feel heat hardest — and some regular medicines (like water tablets) make dehydration more likely. If you have an elderly relative or neighbour in Anfield or nearby, a daily knock on the door during a heatwave is a genuinely life-saving habit. If you're on regular medication and unsure how heat affects it, ask our pharmacist — it's a two-minute conversation.

Sleeping in the heat

  • Thin cotton sheets, a lukewarm (not cold) shower before bed, and a fan with a bowl of ice in front of it works surprisingly well.
  • Keep bedroom curtains shut all day so the room never heats up in the first place.
  • Struggling with restless nights all summer? A gentle option like Magnesium + Sleep Complex may support a calmer wind-down — and our pharmacist can talk through what's suitable for you.
