The UK is in the middle of one of its hottest spells on record, with temperatures climbing past 36°C. While many of us enjoy the sunshine, this kind of heat can be genuinely dangerous — especially for older adults, young children, and anyone with a long-term health condition.
As your local Liverpool pharmacy, here's our straightforward, practical guide to staying safe.
1. Stay properly hydrated
In extreme heat, your body loses fluids and salts faster than usual. Water is essential, but in a heatwave you may also lose electrolytes through sweat.
- Aim to drink water regularly throughout the day — don't wait until you feel thirsty
- For heavy sweating, electrolyte sachets can help replace lost salts
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you further
2. Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion
Heat exhaustion can creep up quickly. Watch for: tiredness, dizziness, headache, feeling sick, heavy sweating, and muscle cramps. If someone feels unwell, move them somewhere cool, give them water, and help them cool down. If they don't improve within 30 minutes — or show signs of heatstroke (confusion, hot dry skin, a very high temperature) — call 999 immediately.
3. Store your medicines correctly
This is one most people forget. Many medicines should be kept below 25°C, and some — like certain insulin, inhalers and creams — can be damaged by heat. Keep medication out of direct sunlight, away from hot windowsills and cars. If you're unsure whether your medicine is heat-sensitive, ask us — we're always happy to check.
4. Protect your skin
UK sun in a heatwave is strong enough to burn quickly. Use a broad-spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen, reapply every two hours, and cover up during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm).
5. Look out for others
Check on elderly neighbours and relatives, never leave children or pets in cars, and keep an eye on anyone with heart, lung or kidney conditions — they're more vulnerable in the heat.
