Threadworms: how to treat the whole family and stop them coming back

Threadworms are treated with mebendazole, sold as Ovex, and everyone in the household should be treated at the same time, even if they have no symptoms. Hygiene measures for six weeks are just as important as the tablet, because the medicine kills the worms but not their eggs.

How do I know it is threadworms?

The main sign is itching around the bottom, worse at night. You may see tiny white worms, like small pieces of thread, around the bottom or in stools. They are very common in children and spread easily in families.

How does the treatment work?

Ovex contains mebendazole 100mg. It is a single dose for adults and children aged 2 and over. Because reinfection is common, a second dose after two weeks is often recommended. Follow the pack.

Who cannot take it?

Mebendazole is not suitable for children under 2, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. In these cases the hygiene method alone is used for six weeks. Speak to our pharmacist or your GP.

What hygiene steps stop them coming back?

  • Wash hands and scrub under nails before eating, after the toilet and after changing nappies.
  • Keep nails short, and discourage nail biting and thumb sucking.
  • Shower or wash around the bottom every morning to remove eggs laid overnight.
  • Change underwear and nightwear daily.
  • On the first day of treatment, wash bedding, towels and soft toys on a hot wash. Do not shake them.
  • Damp-dust and vacuum bedrooms, and clean the bathroom and kitchen surfaces.

Does my child need to stay off school?

No. Children can go to school or nursery as normal.
