Hajj & Umrah Vaccinations in Liverpool — Complete 2026 Pilgrimage Guide

Preparing for the journey of a lifetime — start with your health

The pilgrimage to Mecca is one of the most spiritually significant journeys a Muslim can undertake. Whether you're going for Hajj — the obligatory pilgrimage — or Umrah, the smaller pilgrimage, the experience is deeply meaningful, often once-in-a-lifetime, and physically demanding.

Crowds of millions, intense heat, long walks, communal accommodation, shared food and water — Hajj and Umrah create unique health challenges. The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health requires specific vaccinations for entry, and missing them could mean being turned away from your flight or denied a visa.

At Anfield Pharmacy in Liverpool L4, we serve the city's significant Muslim community with full Hajj and Umrah vaccination services. We understand the importance of this journey and provide a respectful, multilingual, expert service to help you travel safely.

The journey ahead: why vaccinations matter for pilgrims

Hajj and Umrah create perfect conditions for disease transmission:

  • Pilgrims from over 180 countries travel to one place
  • Crowds of millions at peak times
  • Hot, humid weather weakens immune systems
  • Shared accommodation in tents and hotels
  • Physical exhaustion from long walks and Tawaf
  • Communal eating and water sharing
  • Reduced sleep during intense ritual periods

Historic outbreaks of meningitis at Hajj have led to strict vaccination requirements. The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health updates requirements annually, and all pilgrims must show proof of vaccination at visa application and on arrival.

Without the correct vaccines and certificates, you cannot enter Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage. It's that important.

Mandatory vaccines for Hajj & Umrah 2026

For the 2026 pilgrimage season, the following vaccinations are required by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health:

1. Meningitis ACWY (Quadrivalent) — REQUIRED FOR ALL PILGRIMS

This is the most critical vaccine. It protects against four strains of meningococcal disease (A, C, W, and Y) — a bacterial infection that has caused outbreaks at Hajj in the past.

Brands used: Menveo, Nimenrix, MenQuadfi
When to get it: At least 10 days before travel, no more than 5 years before travel
Validity: 5 years for adults
Certificate: International Certificate required for visa application

This vaccine is mandatory for every pilgrim regardless of age. You will not be granted a Saudi visa without proof of vaccination.

2. Polio Vaccine — REQUIRED FROM CERTAIN COUNTRIES

Pilgrims travelling from countries where polio is still circulating (or has recently been detected) need a polio booster. This currently includes Afghanistan, Pakistan, some African countries with outbreaks, and other countries on the WHO polio watch list. If you have travelled through any of these countries in recent years, you may also need a polio booster.

3. Yellow Fever — REQUIRED FROM CERTAIN COUNTRIES

If you've travelled to or from a yellow fever endemic country in the 6 months before pilgrimage, you'll need proof of yellow fever vaccination.

Strongly recommended vaccines

While not legally required, these vaccines are strongly recommended:

Seasonal Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

With millions of pilgrims in close quarters, flu spreads rapidly during Hajj season. The flu vaccine reduces your risk significantly. Annual vaccination is recommended.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Requirements have evolved over recent years. Currently, vaccination is strongly recommended but specific requirements vary by season. We'll provide current guidance at your consultation.

Hepatitis A

Spread through contaminated food and water — a real risk in shared dining environments. One injection provides good protection.

Hepatitis B

Recommended for pilgrims who may need medical care abroad or who plan to receive Hijama (cupping) or shaving services. Two-dose course needed.

Typhoid & Tetanus boosters

Spread through contaminated food and water. Recommended for longer pilgrimages.

When should you get vaccinated?

Ideal timeline

  • 3-4 months before pilgrimage: Initial consultation, vaccine schedule planned
  • 8 weeks before: Hepatitis B course started (if needed)
  • 6-10 weeks before: Meningitis ACWY administered (must be at least 10 days before travel)
  • 4-6 weeks before: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio booster
  • 2 weeks before: Flu vaccine, final reviews

Booking advice

For Hajj 2026, we recommend booking your pre-pilgrimage consultation by mid-March at the latest. Demand peaks in April and May — appointments fill up quickly. For Umrah, plan vaccinations 6-8 weeks before your trip.

How our Hajj & Umrah service works

Anfield Pharmacy has served hundreds of Liverpool pilgrims over the years. We've designed our service specifically for the needs of the Muslim community.

Step 1: Book your pre-pilgrimage consultation

Call 0151 263 3631 or walk in to schedule a slot. We can usually see new patients within a week.

Step 2: Comprehensive pilgrimage consultation (~20 minutes)

In our private consultation room, the pharmacist will review your travel dates and itinerary, check your vaccination history, discuss any chronic health conditions, review current medications, identify required vaccines, and provide advice on managing chronic conditions during pilgrimage.

Step 3: Vaccinations administered

We can give most vaccines same-day. The Meningitis ACWY certificate is provided immediately. For multi-dose courses (Hepatitis B), we'll book your follow-up appointments.

Step 4: International Certificates issued

You'll receive an International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow booklet — required for visa), personal vaccination record, Hajj/Umrah health advice sheet, and receipt for records.

Special advice for older pilgrims and those with chronic conditions

Many pilgrims, especially for Hajj, are aged 50+ and may have chronic health conditions. Special preparation is essential:

Diabetes patients

Bring sufficient insulin and oral medications (we can dispense extra travel supply). Pack glucose tablets for hypoglycaemia. Keep medications in hand luggage with cool pack. Bring a doctor's letter explaining your medication.

High blood pressure patients

Continue medications as prescribed. Stay extremely well hydrated. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Take medications at consistent times.

Asthma patients

Bring extra inhalers (relievers AND preventers). Carry inhalers in hand luggage. Crowd dust and exhaustion can trigger attacks — be prepared.

Heart disease patients

Pace yourself during rituals. Take breaks during long walks. Don't push beyond comfort during Tawaf.

We can dispense emergency supplies of all common medications for your trip — please discuss during consultation.

Beyond vaccines: pilgrimage health essentials

Smart pilgrims also pack:

  • High SPF sun cream (50+)
  • Hat or umbrella for sun protection

Hajj & Umrah vaccination FAQs

Can I get the meningitis vaccine on the NHS for Hajj?

Generally no. The NHS provides Meningitis ACWY routinely to teenagers, but not specifically for Hajj/Umrah. You'll need to come privately.

How much do Hajj vaccinations cost?

Costs depend on which vaccines you need. The Meningitis ACWY is typically £50-£75 including certificate. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Polio boosters are usually £35-£60 each. Family discounts available — please call 0151 263 3631 for current pricing.

Are you registered to give the official certificate?

Yes. We provide the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow booklet) required by Saudi authorities. Without this, you cannot enter Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage.

What if I had my Hajj vaccines years ago?

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is valid for 5 years for adults. If your last vaccination was longer ago, you'll need a booster. Bring your previous certificate so we can verify dates.

Can I get vaccines if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

Some vaccines (live vaccines) are not recommended in pregnancy. Many pregnant women postpone pilgrimage. Discuss with our pharmacist for personalised advice.

May Allah accept your pilgrimage

Whether you're preparing for Hajj 2026 or planning an Umrah journey, we wish you a safe, blessed, and spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage. The health preparation is just one part of a much larger spiritual journey.
