Flu season in the UK usually peaks between December and February, and the vaccine takes about two weeks to build protection. That is why pharmacies start vaccinating in the autumn. Here is what you need to know for 2026/27, from a pharmacy that has been giving flu jabs on Oakfield Road for years.
Who can have the flu jab free on the NHS?
Eligibility is set nationally each year. The groups are broadly the same every season:
- Everyone aged 65 and over (including those turning 65 by 31 March)
- Adults aged 18 to 64 with a long-term health condition, for example asthma needing regular inhalers, COPD, diabetes, heart, kidney or liver disease, a weakened immune system, or a BMI of 40 or above
- Pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
- People living in a care home
- Carers, and people who live with someone whose immune system is weakened
- Frontline health and social care workers
- Children aged 2 and 3 (nasal spray, usually at the GP) and school-aged children through the school programme

When does it start?
The adult NHS programme normally opens in early October, with pregnant women and children able to start from September. Exact dates are confirmed by the NHS each summer; call us or check in store for this year's start date. There is no need to wait until you are unwell - the best time is before flu is circulating.
Not eligible? Private flu jabs
If you do not qualify for a free vaccine you can still have one privately at the pharmacy. It is a quick appointment, no GP letter needed, and it is worth it if you work with the public, travel, or simply cannot afford a week off work. Ask us for this season's price.
Flu and COVID-19 together
Many people are offered an autumn COVID-19 booster in the same period. Where both are available, the two vaccines can be given at the same visit. We are adding COVID-19 vaccination to our booking system this season - ask in store or call us to be added to the list.
What to expect
- A short eligibility check and consent form
- The injection in the upper arm; the whole visit takes about ten minutes
- A slightly sore arm or feeling tired for a day is common; you cannot catch flu from the jab
