Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelid edges. Eyelids feel sore, itchy or gritty, look red, and often have crusts at the base of the lashes, especially in the morning. It is very common, not contagious and usually long-term, but a good routine keeps it under control.
The daily routine
- Warm compress, 5–10 minutes. This softens the oils blocking the glands in the lid. A reusable Blepha Eye Bag warming mask holds the heat far better than a flannel.
- Clean the lid edges. Use a sterile cleanser such as Blephagel, Blephasol lotion or Blephaclean wipes to remove crusts along the lash line.
- Repeat twice a day while it is flaring, then once a day to keep it away.
Many people with blepharitis also have dry eyes. A preservative-free lubricant helps – see our dry eye drops guide. For a ready-made kit, Blephasol Duo pairs the lotion with pads.
When to see an optician or GP
Seek advice if your vision changes, your eye is very painful or red, you have a lump on the eyelid that keeps growing, or the routine has not helped after 2–4 weeks.

No. It cannot be passed to other people.
Can blepharitis be cured?
It usually comes and goes, but daily lid hygiene keeps symptoms under control for most people.
