Skin has a hard time transitioning from summer to autumn. SPF-and-sweat mode ends abruptly, central heating starts, temperatures drop, and suddenly skin feels tight, dull and reactive. The fix isn't a shelf of new products — it's a smaller, calmer routine done consistently. Here's the 3-step autumn reset our pharmacist recommends.
What actually changes in autumn
Two things: cooler outdoor air holds less moisture, and indoor heating pulls the rest out. Skin's barrier gets stripped faster, so anything harsh (hot showers, strong actives, foaming everything) shows up as dryness, flaking, redness or breakouts of a new kind. Autumn skincare is about protecting the barrier — not fixing every issue at once.
Step 1 — Gentler cleansing
Swap high-foam cleansers for something kinder. CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser keeps moisture in while removing SPF and grime. If you're oily or blemish-prone, CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is a step down from harsher gels but still deep-cleaning.
Step 2 — Hydrate, then moisturise
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 on damp skin, sealed with CeraVe Moisturising Cream or, for very dry or sensitive skin, La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP+M. This one combination handles most autumn dryness.
Step 3 — Keep the SPF
Yes, still. UV drops in autumn but doesn't disappear, and daily SPF stops the year-round ageing effect of UVA. A lightweight formula like Bioré UV Aqua Rich SPF50 layers well under makeup and doesn't feel heavy in cooler weather.
Three autumn skincare mistakes
- Piling on new actives because you saw a TikTok. Autumn is the wrong time to introduce three retinols. Add one thing at a time.
- Hot showers feel great, wreck the skin barrier. Warm is fine.
- Ignoring the body — arms, legs and hands dry out fastest. E45 Cream or a body version of Lipikar keeps things comfortable.
